Seasonal Jewellery: What to Wear and When

Jewellery does not really have seasons, but clothing does, and that changes what works. Thinking about the year in four parts is a simple way to keep a small collection feeling fresh without buying anything new.

Spring

Lighter layers mean necklines open up again. Fine chains, small hoops and single pendants suit the shift, and lighter stones or pearls feel right against pastel and neutral fabrics.

Summer

Skin is more visible, so anklets, stacked bracelets and layered chains have room to work. This is also the season that is hardest on jewellery: sun cream, chlorine and salt water all dull plating, so keep the more delicate pieces for the evening.

Autumn

Knitwear and higher necklines call for longer chains worn over the fabric, chunkier links and warmer metals. Gold tones sit particularly well with camel, rust and olive.

Winter

Polo necks and coats hide most necklaces, which makes earrings and rings the pieces that actually get seen. It is the best season for a statement earring, and the time when a bold cuff or a wide band earns its place.

Rotate rather than buy

Moving pieces in and out of a small tray each season makes the same collection feel new. It also means every item gets checked regularly, so a loose stone or a worn clasp is spotted before it becomes a loss.
