Travelling With Jewellery Without Damaging It

Most jewellery damage happens in transit rather than in wear. Suitcases get thrown, wash bags get squashed and chains find each other in the dark. A little preparation prevents nearly all of it.

Plan what you actually need

Choose one metal tone and pack pieces that work with several outfits. Two pairs of earrings, one everyday chain, one bracelet and one ring covers most trips. Leaving the sentimental and irreplaceable pieces at home is the single best precaution.

Keep everything separated

Individual soft pouches or small resealable bags stop pieces rubbing together. Softer materials such as pearls and plated items should never share a compartment with harder steel or stone-set pieces.

Simple tricks that work

Thread fine chains through a drinking straw and fasten the clasp. Push stud earrings through a button so the pair stays together and the backs cannot roll away. Wrap a bangle in a sock to stop it flexing under pressure.

Always carry it with you

Jewellery belongs in your hand luggage, never in checked baggage. Airline liability for valuables in the hold is minimal and cases are handled roughly.

Take it off for the pool and the beach

Chlorine, salt water, sun cream and sand are the four worst things for plated jewellery, and sand in particular scratches soft metals badly. A small pouch in your beach bag is easier than a repair when you get home.
