Jewellery is a generous gift and an easy one to get slightly wrong. A few simple checks remove most of the risk without spoiling the surprise.
Look at what they already wear
The most reliable guide is the collection they have chosen for themselves. Note whether they wear gold or silver tones, whether their pieces are fine or bold, and whether they favour earrings, necklaces or rings. Buying in the same register as their existing jewellery almost always lands better than buying something you would like.
Necklaces and earrings are safer than rings
Ring sizing is difficult to guess and awkward to correct. Necklaces are forgiving because most come in adjustable lengths, and earrings need no sizing at all. If you do want to buy a ring, a bracelet or a bangle is often the better version of the same idea.
Check for metal sensitivities
If the person tends to react to costume jewellery, choose surgical stainless steel, titanium or solid gold rather than plated pieces. It is worth asking a family member rather than guessing.
Presentation is part of the gift
A lined box, a soft pouch and a polishing cloth make an inexpensive piece feel considered. It also gives them somewhere to keep it, which means it is more likely to be looked after.
Keep the receipt and check the returns policy
Nobody minds an exchange. Knowing that a piece can be swapped for a different length or style takes the pressure off the decision entirely, and it is the one part of gifting jewellery that people most often forget.
