Earring Styles Explained: Studs, Hoops and Drops

Earrings sit closest to the face, which is why the style you choose has more effect on how an outfit reads than almost any other piece. The names are worth knowing, because they describe how a piece behaves as much as how it looks.

Studs

A single element fixed directly to a post. They are the most comfortable option, the safest for sleeping in and the easiest to wear under headphones or a helmet. A pair of well-made studs is the most useful earring anyone can own.

Hoops

Circular or oval, from tiny huggies that sit tight to the lobe up to large statement hoops. Small hoops behave like studs in daily wear; larger ones move and catch light, which makes them read as deliberate styling rather than background jewellery.

Drops and dangles

Any design where the decorative part hangs below the ear. Drops are usually short and fixed, while dangles swing freely. They elongate the neck and are the most flattering choice with an updo or a high neckline.

Fittings matter as much as design

Butterfly backs are common but can loosen; screw backs and locking backs are far more secure for anything valuable. Hooks are easy to put in but slip out more often than people expect.

Weight is the deciding factor

Anything heavy will drag on the lobe within a few hours. Hollow construction and lightweight alloys let a large earring look bold without being uncomfortable, which is why a big earring is not automatically a heavy one.
