Nickel is by far the most common cause of jewellery-related skin irritation, and the labels used to describe the alternatives are not always as precise as they sound. Knowing what the words actually mean makes it much easier to shop with confidence.
Hypoallergenic is not a legal standard
The word simply means a product is less likely to cause a reaction. In most markets it is not certified or regulated, so it tells you the maker's intention rather than the composition. The material name on the listing is always more useful than the claim on the label.
Nickel-free versus low-nickel
Truly nickel-free means there is no nickel in the alloy at all. Many pieces described as nickel-free are in fact low-nickel, meaning nickel is present but bound tightly enough that very little is released onto the skin. For most people that is perfectly fine; for a diagnosed nickel allergy it may not be.
Materials that are usually well tolerated
Surgical stainless steel marked 316L, titanium, niobium, platinum and high-carat solid gold are the most dependable choices. Sterling silver is generally well tolerated too, although cheaper silver alloys sometimes contain nickel as a hardener.
What to look out for
Redness or itching that follows the outline of a clasp, an earring post or the back of a pendant is the classic pattern. If that happens, stop wearing the piece and check what the base metal is rather than assuming all jewellery is the problem.
