A name or initial necklace is one of the few pieces of jewellery that cannot be bought by accident. That makes it a strong gift, and it also means the details matter more than usual, because there is no returning a piece with someone's name on it.

Font changes everything

Script and cursive fonts look soft and traditional but become fragile with long names, because the connecting strokes get thin. Block and sans-serif fonts are sturdier and read more clearly from a distance. If the name is more than eight characters, a simpler font is usually the safer choice.

Check the length of the plate, not just the chain

Longer names produce wider plates, which can sit awkwardly on a narrow collarbone or disappear under a shirt collar. Most makers publish the plate width for a given number of characters, so it is worth reading before ordering.

Decide between a name and an initial

A full name is personal and unmistakable. A single initial is more discreet, layers more easily and works better for a gift when you are not certain about someone's taste.

Spelling, accents and capitals

Type the name exactly as you want it engraved, including accents and capital letters, and read it back once before confirming. Most workshops cut precisely what was submitted.

Allow for production time

Personalised pieces are made to order, so they take longer than stock items. If it is a gift for a specific date, order with a comfortable margin rather than relying on express shipping.
