Everyday or Occasion? Where to Spend on Jewellery

Not every piece of jewellery deserves the same budget. Deciding where the money goes is much easier once you separate what you wear constantly from what you wear occasionally, because the two are judged by completely different standards.

Everyday pieces should be judged on durability

Anything you wear daily faces water, sweat, sleeves and door handles. Here, material and construction matter far more than decoration. Solid stainless steel, titanium or solid gold will still look right in five years; thin plating over a soft base will not. Spend on the clasp and the chain, not the sparkle.

Occasion pieces can be bolder and cheaper

A dramatic set worn a handful of times a year does not need to survive a decade of daily wear. This is where plated pieces, statement stones and larger designs make sense, because you get maximum impact for a modest outlay.

The cost-per-wear test

Divide the price by the number of times you honestly expect to wear it. A well-made everyday chain at a higher price often works out cheaper per wear than three inexpensive ones that tarnish and get abandoned.

Where to compromise

Buy the best you can for earrings you never take out and the chain you wear every day. Be relaxed about trend pieces, seasonal colours and anything you are only trying out. That balance keeps a collection both practical and interesting.
