Most people own more jewellery than they wear. A capsule collection is simply a small set of pieces that work with almost everything you own, so getting dressed becomes quicker and the things you buy actually get used.
The seven pieces that do the most work
A pair of small hoops, a pair of studs, one fine chain, one pendant on a slightly longer chain, one everyday bracelet, one plain band and one piece with a little more presence for occasions. That is enough to cover almost every situation without duplication.
Choose a dominant metal
Pick gold or silver as your base and let roughly three quarters of the collection sit in that tone. It makes everything mix instinctively. Keep one or two two-tone pieces as bridges so you can still wear the other metal when you feel like it.
Buy for the life you actually have
If you work with your hands, heavy rings will annoy you. If you wear high necklines most of the year, a short pendant will sit hidden under fabric. Look at what you wore last month rather than what you imagine wearing.
One in, one out
Once the seven pieces are in place, add only when something genuinely replaces or clearly outperforms what you already own. A collection stays useful because it is edited, not because it is large.
