Metal choice is the single biggest factor in whether a piece of jewellery looks like it belongs to you. Skin tone, wardrobe and daily wear all play a part, and the answer is rarely as simple as picking a favourite.

Read your undertone

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. If they read blue or purple you probably have a cool undertone, and silver, white gold and platinum will look crisp against your skin. If they read green your undertone is warm, and yellow or rose gold tends to glow. If you genuinely cannot tell, you are neutral, which is the easiest of all: both work.

Consider what you already own

Jewellery is worn against clothing, not in isolation. Cool, blue-based colours such as navy, grey and emerald sit beautifully with silver tones. Warmer shades such as cream, camel, olive and rust are lifted by gold. Black works with everything, which is why a gold pendant on a black jumper is such a dependable combination.

Two-tone is a real option

Two-tone pieces solve the problem entirely and make mixing easy, because they give the eye a reason to accept both metals at once. If you already own plenty of gold and plenty of silver, a single two-tone bracelet or ring can become the piece that ties the whole collection together.

Durability matters too

Stainless steel and solid gold hold up best to daily wear. Gold-plated pieces are ideal for occasion wear and lighter use, provided you keep them away from perfume, chlorine and long soaks in water.
