How to Layer Necklaces Like a Stylist

Layered necklaces look effortless when they are done well, and slightly chaotic when they are not. The difference almost always comes down to three things: length, weight and metal.

Space the lengths properly

Leave at least four to five centimetres between each chain so every piece has room to be seen. A reliable combination is a 40 cm choker, a 45 cm mid-length chain and a 55 cm pendant. If two chains sit too close together they will compete for attention and tangle constantly.

Vary the weight, not the mood

Mix a fine chain with a slightly bolder one so the stack has contrast, but keep the overall feeling consistent. A delicate pearl strand and a heavy curb chain rarely agree with each other. Two or three pieces is usually the sweet spot; four works if at least two of them are very fine.

Choose one hero piece

Let a single pendant, initial or stone do the talking and keep everything else plain. This gives the eye somewhere to land and stops the look from feeling crowded.

About mixing metals

Gold and silver tones can absolutely be worn together, as long as you repeat the mix somewhere else, such as a two-tone bracelet or ring. Repetition is what makes it read as intentional rather than accidental.

One last practical tip: fasten the shortest chain last. It sounds minor, but it keeps the clasps from gathering into one bundle at the back of your neck.
